As Rachel, Tina, Kristen, and Joe - among thousands - have alleged that SimpleBills is overcharging tenants and a downright scummy company to work with. SimpleBills has charge people I know bills that they do not even owe, sent debt collectors, and only backed down once complaints with the Better Business Bureau and Consumer Financial Protection Bureau were filed. It is only fair to ask why there are so many complaints that are not being addressed, and where all the money from their exorbitant fees and questionable bills is going. Perhaps into the pockets of the private equity firms that own RealPage and company executives.
The government has noticed the potentially illegal activities of RealPage and instituted a criminal investigation into the company. This goes alongside with a Department of Justice lawsuit, which is joined by eight states: https://www.justice.gov/archives/opa/pr/justice-department-sues-realpage-algorithmic-pricing-scheme-harms-millions-american-renters
The city of San Francisco has already banned some of RealPage's software https://www.cbsnews.com/sanfrancisco/news/sf-realpage-yardi-supervisors-approve-ban-targeting-software-algorithms-setting-rents/
